Orange Wing Amazon Parrot Information
The Orange Winged Amazon also known as the Orange Winged Parrot is a medium sized Amazon parrot. In the wild it lives from Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago south to Peru and central Brazil. Its habitat is forest and semi-open country. It is considered an agricultural pest in its native range. The pet trade captured and imported over 66,000 Orange Wing Amazons between 1981 and 1985. It is also hunted as a food source in parts of South America. The Orange Winged Amazon is a predominantly green parrot about 33 cm or 13 inches long and weighing about 340 gm. It has blue and yellow feathers on its head which varies in extent between individuals. The upper mandible is partly horn colored and partly dark-grey. It has orange feathers in the wings and tail, which can be seen when in flight. The male and female are identical in external appearance. As a pet Orange Wing Amazons can be loud at times and generally have a playful demeanor. My personal experience with Orange Winged Amazons has been positive with the exception of a few minutes of loud squawking in the morning and evening. Orange Wing Amazons can also be messy but that is one of the downsides of bird ownership. They are excellent at mimicking sounds and some have impressive vocabularies. They can be expected to live 50 years or longer if properly cared for. The Orange Winged Amazon that I have spent time with is content by himself when the house is quite but wants to be with the family when activity picks up. If an Orange Winged Amazon is upset they will let you know. Parrots require a lot of attention but I have not experienced feather plucking or other issues when at work. An Orange Winged Amazon is an excellent pet if you are in the market for a parrot. Parrots are a major commitment but Orange Winged Amazons are not as demanding as some other parrot species.
